Underground coal fire video

I promised that I would post the video from our May trip, when we went through Centralia, PA. The coal fires have made most of the town unlivable as they burn the coal vein and the ground above caves in.

So, while we were there we looked around for the smoke. We found it right next to the cemetery. I wish I could've gotten the video while it was under the cemetery.

Anyway, thanks to Bucky, here it is.

Oh man, that is just surreal! It would be downright freaky beneath the cemetery! I am sadly ignorant of the coal fire situation -- they are intentionally burning the coal vein beneath the town? For what purpose? And how long do they expect it to take or is it indefinite? Gah! Can't be good, to my way of thinking.

Mr B, I don't know. I'm waiting for Bucky's answer.

E, I probably should have explained. The coal fires are not on purpose. They can't put them out. They can go on, practically, forever. I just had to check with Ichabod, maybe he'll comment or send me some info to post.

Most of them were from fires that people started that caught in the coal mines. There's one over a hundred years old in Colorado. In Australia there's one that's thought to be 5-6 thousand years old, possibly started by a bush fire.

You're right they're not good. There are a lot of them in China. There's speculation that the amount of CO2 released from the China fires is more than from all the vehicles in the US.

Anyway, that's probably more answer than you were looking for.
:-)

That’s spooky. Strangely, I have drive through Centralia a couple of time and never notice—or perhaps paid attention—to them.

It does seem very strange that this sort of thing can happen. The video did capture it better than a still shot. Good music editing, Bucky.

We'll be sure to keep it away from your Buckyballs! Thanks again!

Nick, you have to go looking for them. This was right next to the cemetary, which isn't on the main drag. There was really much more city there than I'd imagined there would. Really pretty and rural.

Candy, I don't know. It was a heavy, rainy day. And I didn't get out of the car, but I'll but the Centralians could tell us.

Mr B, I'm sure you'd like B Barzedor music, too. ;-)

Danielle, what bothers me is that there's just no way to put them out. They can go on forever, or until there's no more coal, I guess. Yes, what would I do without my sister!

tshsmom, those must really suck, too. Do they also go for a really long time?

Thanks, Laurie!

htgt, Bucky did make some good music for that, didn't she? It was pretty eerie looking, especially on that rainy day.

Erin, you should go see it sometime. Do you ever have a reason to travel to the East? Ichabod could probably help you with directions there, I know I can't.

Tweety, thanks! I don't know how many people still live there, but I think I would've taken a government buy-out.

ChiaKittn, thanks! Can't wait to see you.

Yeah, they burn until they run out of fuel. When you have a 100 square mile bog, that can take a while. :(

Sounds macabre, to my way of thinking. maybe the stiffs entombed below the turf in the cemetery were designated to serve their eternity stoking those fires in the coal mine.
Have a wonderful day.

I'd never heard of coal fires like that. It sounds awful. Love the vid though and Bucky's music sounds a bit like something Eric Serra would have put in The Fifth Element. :)

tshsmom, sounds like they're pretty bad for the environment, too, then. That sucks.

Kranki, thanks!

Vest, wow, that's a cool story that they could tell their kids. A spooky, local, story. Thanks

Platypus, I wonder if they have any over in England? I know you have coal there. :-)

Cathy, sometimes this blog is about educating people.

From what I can tell, we don't have any underground coal fires in the UK. I have to admit you've got me fascinated now! I had honestly never heard of such a thing and yet they seem to be all over the world and a pretty significant environmental issue.
