Been there, seen that
The next day of our DC trip we took a tour bus to various sites and memorials. I took so many pictures that it's going to be hard to choose what to put up here. If you'd like to see the set it's here.
We saw the Capitol.
We also stopped briefly way out in front of the White House.
There was the WWII memorial.
There was the Jefferson Memorial.
I really liked the FDR Memorial. This was the second statue they put up of him. The first one didn't have the wheelchair showing.
They also had four waterfalls, each representing one of his terms in office. The first one had no obstacles, the second a bit more, the last one had a lot because things got rougher to handle. Wars are not easy for anyone, least of all the president.
This was for the Korean War.
Wish I could've gotten a straighter shot of the reflecting pool.
Then there was the Lincoln Memorial.
Some girls, I don't know what country they came from, asked to take a picture of them. Then they offered to take a picture of us.
Vietnam War
And a lovely tribute to the nurses.
And, of course, we must not forget Arlington Cemetery.
The tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
And the tribute to Iwo Jima.
Thank you to all of our veterans.

God, one of those is going to be my son.
Lets hope its one of the very very very old generals.
Hi, Jess, nice to see you. Praying that your son stays completely safe and healthy!
I love the Vietnam war statue and the nurses statue. And let's hope that our countrymen in the middle east all come back safe and sound, for those that are still able to. Nice photos, Squirl-Bob!
I just spent the last hour reading about the Tomb of the Unknowns. It was exciting to read that the Vietnam soldier was identified. I'll have to check your set on Flickr to see if you snagged any photos of the guards. :D
Jim, aren't those statues great? I'm praying they all get back safely. Thanks!
Courtney, I did get some pictures, but I don't think I put them on Flickr. I took a couple of videos, but didn't like the way they turned out. That's cool that they identified the Vietnam soldier. Hope that doesn't mean he has to lose his status.
All of the memorials in DC are moving, and can be a bit overwhelming. This post was a nice tribute for veterans day.
Wow, okay. I never realized what the waterfall were for in the FDR memorial until I read your post. *donk*
:)
Love how that nice phallus is sticking up between the two of you. ;-)
Thanks for sharing the lovely pictures. I just love all the memorials in DC. They sure do take a lot into consideration and make them look so well.
I've always wondered what these memorials will look like 100 years from now.
Well, crap - I meant to comment on this the day you showed it to me.
You'd think FDR could've at least stood up to pose for the statue. Sheesh!
Ern, yes, they are moving. I've been dragging my feet posting about the vacation but remembering it was Veterans Day made me kick this one in gear.
Lady M, that's why having a tour guide sometimes helps. And don't you just love the phallus sitting on Ichabod's shoulder? It was my pleasure to share these pictures. I hope we can keep them intact for future generations. I guess only time will tell.
Bucky, you probably thought you'd commented after you talked to me about this post. And, yeah, you'd think a president could show a little respect. :-p
Hi from the other Washington!
Wow, it was just as if I were there myself! Except with a cat blocking my view....
Very, very cool photos, Squirly! Now, where's the part about Susie?! ;)
What a beautiful tribute to our veterans!
I really liked the FDR memorial too. I thought it was really great.
I liked seeing all of your shots. It reminds me of being there and seeing them too.
SEE, hi! Yes, I didn't have any cats blocking my view while I was there. :-)
E, thanks! I didn't see Susie until the last night before we left. It's coming!
tshsmom, thanks! It's, literally, the least I could do.
Danielle, I had so many pictures of the FDR memorial but couldn't post them all here. So glad you enjoyed them. :-)
Wow what a trip Squirl.. Amazing.. We have quite a few vets that arent remembered like those that are out there.. Thanks for doing so Squirl..
Happy Thanksgiving Squirl and Ichabod.....
Happy Thanksgiving, Squirly-dear. This post seems fitting, because it reminds me of how much we really have to be thankful for in our country.
I hope you have a very enjoyable holiday.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING Squirl and Ichabod!
Have a (late) Happy Thanksgiving! :)
you've got some really great pics from your DC trip! I'm impressed!
I haven't been here in a LOOOOOOONG time
(sorry Squirl)
but I loved the photo of the Korean ar Memorial - when I saw it years ago, it was at NIGHT, which is extremely trippy because they bottom-light them and from a distance? It looks like real soldiers are coming at you.
OperaGal, it's nice to see you here. I'll bet that was kinda freaky to see at night. If I ever go back I'm going to do a night tour.
