Motif Monday: Getting Pissy

I know it's Tuesday but I'm going to get in on mrtl's Motif Monday. I saw it first on Susie's site. It's called getting pissy. The subject is one I've been on before here. Loud neighbors/neighborhood.

I knew that it probably wouldn't be a great night for sleeping last night. It was Independence Day and Grand Rapids does its fireworks on the 4th, end of story. That would have been fine except that it was impossible for me to get the 5th off. Had I been able to sleep in I wouldn't have been quite so pissy about it all.

The beginning of the day was very still. It was kind of rainy off and on. No extra cars around, I was hoping that everyone had gone to the lakeshore for the day and their fireworks. I should've known better. It was raining harder at the lakeshore than it was here.

As I said, the earlier part of the day was uneventful. I was disappointed as we tried to go out to breakfast, but every place we tried was either packed (we won't wait for a table) or closed. I was so bummed 'cause I didn't want to just go home and eat cereal. Ichabod, sweetheart that he is, made pancakes for us. Later that day we walked to get ice cream cones, another good thing.

As the day went on, though, Ichabod could see that I was working up a head of steam. Even if it hadn't been horribly loud I would have had trouble sleeping as I was working myself up in anticipation. This isn't my first summer living downtown. I know how it can get. Not only that, but there's a ladder to the roof and last year there were people partying and watching the fireworks.

Sure enough, three carloads of young twenty-somethings started heading up to the roof. The neighbors questioned them and they claimed to know the landlord. We're still not sure. I started to get excited as it began to rain harder and they began to leave. But, crap, some of the guys came back a little later. They could have been worse, I guess, I did tell them to be quiet as i needed to get up at 5:30 in the morning.

I was fully awake (had myself worked up) when the fireworks went off so I peeked out the bedroom window and watched some of them. Then when the fireworks were done I was thinking maybe it was time to go to sleep. 10:45 didn't seem too bad at that point, though I like to be asleep between 9:30 and 10:00.

Just about that time the folks from the apartment building next door did their usual warm night thing. Hooting, hollering, and this time, shooting off fireworks till I don't know when. I think I finally fell asleep around 1:00. That 5:30 alarm came waaaay too soon. Oh well, I bet I sleep like a rock tonight.

Fortunately our neighbors must have run out of fireworks Sunday night. I can sympathize with you as I have to be to work by 6 a.m.

tshsmom, I know I had such empathy for you when I read your post. I know how rude neighbors can be. Thanks!

I know I am turning into a cranky old lady, my finger was just twitchin and itchin to call the cops on our neighbors who were lighting off fireworks, everything is illegal here except sparklers, smoke bombs and snaps... they had huge fountains spraying sparks everywhere and m-80s booming all night long, til almost 2am. They are lucky it rained all day, if it had still been dry, I totally would of called, they are also lucky my nieces can sleep through anything or again, I would of called.

God I am old and cranky.

Jess, I am right there with you. I've turned into the cranky old lady around here. With a little common courtesy from the neighbors we wouldn't have to feel this way.

Good thing it wasn't too dry. The idiots that'll shoot those things off never take that kind of thing into consideration.

And your neices are there again. Hope you're having a great time. Seems you're always playing hostess for someone. :-)

You didn't get enough sleep. That's for sure.
Hope tonight's snooze makes up for it!

squirl-
You are welcome to come sleep here, but it's so not commutable.
Some of our guests have trouble sleeping "because it's too quiet!"
Hope you get some peace tonight!

Jamie Dawn, you're right. I'm a wuss about not getting enough sleep. Maybe that has something to do with never being able to have children. I never learned true sleep deprivation. :-)

Sierrabella, I wish I were coming out your way. If that's a real invitation I would love to see your place sometime. Thanks!

BTW, I didn't want to make a new comment just for this but I spelled niece incorrectly in my previous comment and it's driving me nuts.

Of course it's a real invitation!
You and Ichabod can sleep in the haunted room... or not!

Eeek! the haunted room. Of course Ichabod is not a believer. (Intentional pun on Monkees song) Wonder if he'd feel anything? That would be fun to come hang out with you.

When did you move next to a frat house?

What a nice Ichabod!

Actually, Plum, it's very low rent housing. I don't want to sound non-PC because there are people of various colors living there. It's just that some of them either don't work or work a late enough shift to be up all night. Sometimes it goes on until 4:30 or 5:00 am. One of these days I won't live here anymore.

And wasn't Ichabod sweet. He even used a different recipe than normal because I've been having some tummy troubles. :-)

I say you give 'em the full-on fart-out-the-window treatment for revenge.

Yes, that's my words of sweetness from South Dakota. My head is full of mountain sculpture, and all I can think of is the highway sign for the wood carving museum, "Where wood comes alive"

So, hi!

That's just plain rude! Our neighbors are inconsiderate enough to have built the kennel in the one tiny corner of their property which is right outside our bedroom window, for their 2 hunting dogs (who are NEVER allowed in their home), while their own bedroom is conveniently located on the complete other side of their lot. Those dogs bark and howl at night, especially when the neighborhood area is popping with fireworks. I feel your pain, sistah.

Where wood comes alive. I love your sister.

And you, too, love; that sucks, I HATE when I can't get my sleep. I hope you're having wonderful, sweet dreams tonight, for at least 8 hours.

Bucky is back in commenting mode again, yay! I wish the full-on fart-out-the-window treatment would work, but they're around on the street and couldn't see or hear me. Darn it.

Where the wood comes alive. Did they really know what they were saying???

Eclectic, that sucks. Hound dogs, I take it. They have a horrible howl/bark. Did you ever think about calling the police? It's not like my neighbor-situation where they could be back inside before the cops get around to showing up.

Susie, isn't Bucky the best? Thank you. I probably got 7 hours of sleep last night which I'll gladly take. For some reason they weren't out in force last night. Tonight and tomorrow night are supposed to be cooler maybe they'll stay in again.

Mr B, definitely giggle-worthy.

Oooh, poor Squirl, with the noisy neighbors.

Hey. I usually try to avoid going around and leaving random bits of assvice on blogs, but...

Have you ever tried sleeping with earplugs? When Deputy Dad is on night shift, he needs to get a lot of sleep in during the day. But that's not always easy, with kids playing outside, people mowing, etc. So he started wearing earplugs when he naps. It helped him SO MUCH. I just wondered if you'd ever thought of trying that.

Hi Ladybug, I'm always open to assvice. :-) I have been thinking about earplugs. Don't know how comfortable they'd be but I do need to get my sleep. Think I'm gonna have to break down and try it. Thanks!!

Oooh--that musta been a lot of coffee you had yesterday morning! I've been getting sleep like that recently--but it's my fault, not the pub across the street. Last night I stayed up to 12:30 packing boxes and then had to get up at 5 to go pick up my nephew to help out with the packing...I'm a tad tired today, but I feel good for having packed all I did!

I think that earmuffs might work better than earplugs--not in the ear, irritating them. My mom worked nights for a long time so she slept during the day. She had a pair of industrial earmuffs that plugged out all the noises of construction nearby (jackhammers, etc)

And yeah, Ichabod seems like such a sweetie!

Effied, sorry you had to lose sleep over it, but good for you for getting so much packing done.

Did your mom have to sleep on her back when she wore the earmuffs?

And, yes, Ichabod can be a real sweetied when he wants to.

Kranki, you snuck in while I was busy mispelling Effie's name. Honestly, why do I blog when sober? I guess I'm sober almost all the time so that's no excuse. :-)

I did sleep much better last night. They were really quiet. I hope it's cool enough outside that they don't hang out tonight again. So sorry about your neighbors. I guess with the Reign of Terry you aren't going to be getting much help, either.

Urhm...yes, I'd like to speak to Squirl please? What do you mean 'she's not available'?? Waaaaaaiit a minute...you mean she doesn't blog every minute to satisfy my every whim? But she even blogs on weekends! Why else would she do that except to keep me entertained?! Where is she? What have you done with her?!! I want to see Squirl RIGHT NOW, and just stop with the monkey business!! Ohhhhhhhh...'monkey' business. I get it, now. Alright then, just tell her I called. ***sheepish retreat***

What? There's monkey business here?

Nothin' like some monkey mischief at the Squirl's Nest. I really have nothing of value to contribute here, but you're my sister, so I guess I don't have to apply that standard, eh? Comment clutter, blah blah blah blah.

Hi!

Hey, leetle seester, what's up Bucky? You are always welcome to come to my comments and say whatever you want. I don't always have a point when I comment on your blog. :-)
