Just walking around town, Part II
After we left the place with the beautiful flowers, I just had to go back and check something I thought I'd seen on the way over. Sure enough, there was a smoking trash bin. It was enclosed, it wasn't out of hand, and there was nothing else close by to catch fire. So I decided to just take some pictures of it.
The alleyway was between some old factory buildings. I don't know if these turned out as well as I'd have liked, but it was the rust pattern that intrigued me.
There was a pretty good-sized tree of heaven growing here.
And somebody'd been hanging out back here.
Then we went over to a spot where feral cats were living. We'd seen them in there with empty cans and paper plates from people feeding. I was disappointed when we got there and all of the cats were gone. They were being live-trapped and taken to a shelter. But here are some pictures of where they had lived.
The little pink spot on the door was the note to not feed the cats anymore.
I think this is kind of a neat mural.
This place calls itself a Bar & Grill, but it's mostly a bar where the girls who work there wear bikinis, hence the name Tini Bikini's.
I just liked these old Liquor/Food signs.
Dodd's is the only going concern in this building. He's ancient and has had this business forever. He sells CDs but he also has hundreds of vinyl records. As old as he is, he's really sharp, and knows a lot about the music he has there. The Downtown Market, mostly a liquor store, on the right was in business when we moved here but hasn't been for quite a while.
I hope you've enjoyed the rest of my walk through town with me.

Love the mural and the former cat house/alley. I'm STILL sayin' you should make a book of your photos.
Thanks, Jim, you're so sweet.
Five O'Clock vodka. BLECH! :)
I recognize some of those places from last time I went walking with you, and that little record shop kicks ass! I will have to spend some more $$ there next time I'm in town.
Bucky, is that the kind of vodka you used to drink as a young teen? That's some pretty cheap crap there.
Yes, Dodd's has quite the interesting selection. The next time you're in town we'll definitely head over there.
Wow those feral cats really know how to work the spray paint cans! :-)
Awesome pictures Squirl....I feel like I'm visiting you for real every time I stop by your blog!
Yeah, Soozie, those cats really are good. Thanks, I'm happy that you like to go on my walks with me. :)
You should seriously market a photo essay of your local area to the chamber of commerce or visitor's bureau or something. Your interest in the area shows in your already excellent photos, and it's very compelling. It's kinda like how homemade blueberry muffins always taste better because they're made with love.
Eclectic, thanks! They might like some of the pictures. But they might not like the 'hood pictures quite so well...
On the contrary, the way you've captured the areas, they look interesting, not scary or depressing. It's almost like living history, or a contemporary sociology study. Anyway, it's hella cool what you've done on just a little "walk"!
Hmmm. Someone threw a burning cigarette in the trash dumpster—or were there maybe a gaggle of potheads in it?
I think Nick's on to something...
"They'll never find us here. Tee-hee!"
I love the photos.
Thanks for taking us on a walk around town. :o)
Eclectic, you know, they do seem to look almost cheery when I take another look at these pictures. I wonder what the effect would be if it were a dark day, or almost night? Thanks!
Nick, yes, maybe you're on to something. I think you'd have to look at the large version but in the "cat" pictures there's a spray painting of a guy. Next to him it says Poke Smot. Sounds like the sprayer had already had some.
MD, yes, we certainly never looked in there. I'm glad you enjoyed the walk. :)
Pssst. Sqrrrl. Maybe it's intentional, but such cleavage you reveal in the rounded mirror! You naughty girl you!
*blushes*
I really did enjoy the rest of your walk through town. It was fun and very interesting. I have never seen a smoking trash bin, before. The pictures are great.
I think it would make an awesome picture book too--good idea Jim--"Out and about with Squirl"
teehee--my word ver is:
giavjia
i'll leave it to you imagination...
Mr B, there's no cleavage there. Are you trying to get more hits for me on my Flickr site when people go there to check out the "large" version of the picture???
Nina, thanks! So glad that you enjoyed it.
Effie, that kinda sounds like fun to do. And, Effie, my imagination is really running with that word ver. :)
Just catching up. You find flowers that I have never seen. So lovely. I especially like the daisies. And that is one smokin' trash bin. I enjoyed walking around town with you, sis :)
Susie, I'm glad you enjoyed the walk. And I always love showing flowers of pictures. You are definitely right, that bin was suhmokin'. :)
Bone, I think they'd be a great addition to your environment. I honestly do think they're cool. The smoking dumpster HAD to be photographed. No other way.
And I thought about you and Mr B when I posted that picture. You guys could spend lots of time in there. :)
hehe, couldn't resist
Hey Squirl. I must have been thinking of you. Instead of emailing a customer about swirl plates, I wrote Squirl plates hahah.
Thanks for showing us the darker side of your town lol.
Mr B, you devil, you.
August, I love it. Squirl plates. tee hee
You're welcome. Now don't you feel like you've really been to Grand Rapids. :)
Bone, I'll bet you're right. If we'd opened it up we could've eaten for a week.
Now that's one I didn't think of. I'll have to tell Ichabod. :)
If he got his royalties then maybe he can afford to smoke something besides cigarettes...
Do you think he would've so grouchy.
Poor pizza delivery. That's got to be it!
There are enough shootings in this stupid city. I hope he doesn't go postal over pizza.
Do the pastries have to have nuts?
