Underground coal fire video

I promised that I would post the video from our May trip, when we went through Centralia, PA. The coal fires have made most of the town unlivable as they burn the coal vein and the ground above caves in.

So, while we were there we looked around for the smoke. We found it right next to the cemetery. I wish I could've gotten the video while it was under the cemetery.

Anyway, thanks to Bucky, here it is.

The Subway

It's been a long time since I posted an instant message between Ichabod and me. This is from December 2005. He and I work at the same place, we just drive separately. It was one of the early wintry weather days we'd had that year so I was asking him about his drive.

I have to tell you, too, that there is no subway here and no cabs that would've gone from Grand Rapids to our workplace 21 miles away. But, anyway, here's just another example of our free association.

Squirl How was your drive in?
Ichabod I took a cab
Squirl lol
Ichabod No, I took the subway
Squirl that's a sandwich shop
Ichabod you know you can catch it in creston
Ichabod most people don't know that
Squirl um that would be no
Ichabod The subway is one of gr's best kept secrets
Ichabod one of GR's best kept secretions
Squirl lol lol
Ichabod Outside it's cold and snowy, but in the subway it's warm and dry.
Squirl I'll bet
Squirl I thought most people were going slower than was really necessary. The fastest I ever went was 70 and I passed a lot of people. Most of them were going 50 or 55
Ichabod the subway broke the sound barrier
Squirl then it should fix it
Ichabod and all the kings horses and all the kings men so far haven't been able to
Squirl that's because they're union
Ichabod yes they took the union of horses and men. If they'd taken the intersection they might have succeeded
Squirl good point
Ichabod a very good but elusive point
Ichabod or illusive point
Squirl it does paint a pretty picture
Ichabod the intersection is in the centaur
Squirl centaur of town?
Ichabod the centaur of the intersction of all the kings horses and all the kings men.
Squirl Oh, now I get it

A Rose

This is a new addition to my yard. My great-grandmother loved yellow roses. My mother had a climbing yellow rose when we lived in Kentucky. For years after we'd moved to Michigan, when I was a preteen and a teenager, I would buy my mother one single yellow rose on her birthday.

So I thought it was fitting to put a yellow rose bush in my new garden. There are three more pictures in Flickr. If you'd like to see them, just click on the photo here.

Peonies

I was lucky enough to have a peony planted in my yard before I moved here. So, with little to no work on my part I was able to have these gorgeous flowers.

These pictures were from a couple of weeks ago.

Then last Saturday, after a night rain, I got these shots.

I have a bunch of pictures from garden that I need to upload. In the meantime, it was faster to load a couple of sunrise pictures from last week. Enjoy.
