Winter wonderland, yeah right, whatever...

Ichabod and I were planning a long weekend at a lovely, historic hotel. I know that making plans to go to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in December is always iffy. Sometimes, at least in the Lower Peninsula, we haven't seen a flake of snow yet.

We got up early this morning and packed the car. I had my favorite atlas ready and my bathing suit packed for the sauna and whirlpool. The trip to Marquette is a little over 400 miles so we figured we'd be there long before dark.

The sun was actually shining here in the Grand Rapids area. After a while we started seeing snowflakes, no big deal. Then the highway was getting to be quite snow covered. Driving was going very slowly. It wasn't quite whiteouts but the road was very slippery.

We decided to pull off when we got to Cadillac, about 100 miles into the trip. In downtown Cadillac we stopped at a little local diner. We got there just in time to still be able to eat breakfast. While we ate we discussed going on or heading back. Heading back sounded like the safest thing to do.

So for all of you who think snow is all that, well it totally messed up our plans for the weekend. If I could send you that snow I certainly would this weekend!

I wasn't quite as nervous on the way back and decided to haul out the camera. These might be a bit blurry as we were moving right along and I had the flash off.

The windshield was dirty but the way the sun was in and out of the clouds was just gorgeous. I think I might have caught a bit of rainbow in one.

So, for all of you snow-lovers here are some pictures for you. Wanna trade weather???

Oh Squirl, I'm sooooooo sorry it spoiled your plans!! The pictures are just beautiful though. I'd take it from you if I could b/c I truly do love the stuff, but I know it can be a pain in the ass. Sorry it stole from you.

Snow can suck my pucker.

Sorry your trip got screwed. If I see Frosty the Snowman, I'll kick his cheerful frozen ass for you.

The pictures are gaw-geous, though.

Eclectic, I know your family appreciates that white stuff. I just wanted to relax at the nice hotel and have a good time. I guess this is quite the whiney post. Thanks about the pictures.

Bucky, yeah, kick his cheerful, frozen ass. I'd feel better. Thanks!

I no like-a da snow.

But spoiling your weekend is getting stuck in the crap, not making it out to share the nice pix.

Not whiney AT ALL! Being disappointed is quite different than whining. And as Mr. E will easily confirm, I hate being disappointed! Did you ever see "A Fish Called Wanda"? In it, Kevin Kline has the best line: "I-iiiii'm disapPOINTed!" We use it all the time when something falls through that we were counting on.

I'm boiling water right now to help Bucky melt the asshole.

Mr B, we were afraid we might get stuck up there. Stuck or spun off the road, or in an accident, etc.

Eclectic, I really am disappointed. I will get over it, but, crap, right now I'm wallowing in disappointment. Can I help you guys boil that water?

Aw, sorry, Squirl. I hope you still have a lovely weekend. Thanks for taking pix for us. I love snow when I'm home with a fire. I don't like it when I have to go somewhere.

Thanks, Susie. I wouldn't have thought of taking all those pictures if I hadn't started blogging. But as I had planned to take pictures of the great white north this weekend, I just didn't get as far north as I'd planned. :-)

Yup, that road definitely looks slippery.
You made a smart move going home. Lake effect snow is nothing to take lightly!

tshsmom, you're right. You would know as you come from snow country, too.

holy crap you did get a lot of snow! its very pretty, but im ok with seeing it once a year, then it can go away.
sorry your weekend got ruined by the icky stuff. hopefully you'll be able to re-book for another weekend?

Hi, Blogaholic. Yeah the whole thing sucked. We were going to watch the Nutcracker on Saturday night, too. I think we'll just try a different time of the year. Thanks

Sorry the snowed wrecked your plans. You can keep the stuff; send an inch or two on Christmas Eve, but I don’t want it even though I have a 4-wheel drive vehicle!

I hope that whatever you do this weekend is so much fun that it makes up for the shambles the snowfall made of your trip north.

Oh how sad! When we plan stuff like that I look forward to it for weeks. So, I can imagine your disappointment.

:-(

And to not get to see a show too? bad bad.

the pics are kinda pretty though, in that 'we are getting blasted with snow' kind of way.

Oooooo, cool photos! I do hope you didn't get charged for the room.

We got snow here in Seattle too. I agree that it sucks.

I used to laugh at snow, but now that I am a geezer, my opinion has changed somewhat!

So sorry about your ruined weekend, but glad it didn't so overwhelm you that you didn't have inclination to break out the camera! The pics are lovely.

Thanks, Nick. I can even live without snow on Christmas. You know I spent some of my youth in Louisville so white at Christmas doesn't matter to me. You'd need your four-wheel drive, though, if you did get much snow there. I know that they don't have the road equipment like we do.

Danielle, yeah, I'm bummed. But that's better than being stuck in the snow or having an accident. I do feel that it wasn't a total loss as I was able to get pictures. I'll be among the first to admit that snow is pretty, especially on evergreens. And the sun was really a lot cooler looking in person than here in my pictures. We came home to sunshine and a second viewing of Harry Potter 4 anyway.

Jim, thanks! I think we called soon enough, and with a good enough reason, that we shouldn't be charged for the room.

GreatWhite, Ichabod was just saying, while we were coming home, that driving in snowy conditions seemed more fun when he was younger.

I did enjoy taking the pictures, glad you like them. :-)

Sorry about the snow changing your plans. I hate that . . . I would take some snow from you, but have the same dang thing a happening here. At least we got pictures of your snow, the best place for snow in my mind is pictures.

Nina, thanks. You're right. I'd much rather look at snow than be in it.

Equipment for clearing snow from the roads? I am sure that Louisville doesn’t have as much as you up north have and need.

What equipment we do have is, however, much better than the equipment the Germans in the village of Kutzberg had when I lived there in the early ‘70s: two horses dragging a big log is what they used to clear the snow from the village streets.

What a shame! I hope the weekend is just postponed and not totally cancelled.

Nick, I'm trying to picture that here. :-)

We have horse-drawn carriage rides, but I can't imagine the horses being able to keep the streets clear enough.

Kranki, thanks. But the original reason for going there was because we knew someone who was going to have some bit parts in the Nutcracker. That was last night so we really don't have a reason to go all the way up there now.

Send some of that snow over here. It's been down into the 20s in our area, but no snow yet.
